Join the world record salsa dance in Pembroke Pines
Whether it’s the mambo, the cha cha cha or the rumba, Latin dance music lovers will be out in droves in Pembroke Pines next week attempting to set a new world record.
Salsa dancers are invited to help establish the Guinness World Record for salsa dancing Nov. 20 during the 10th Puerto Rican Fiestas Patronales and Business Expo. The 11-day festival starts on Thursday at Pembroke Pines City Center, 10400 Pines Blvd., next to city hall.
All that participants have to do is be able to dance salsa for at least five minutes, said Frank Nieves, festival president and head of the Broward Puerto Rican and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Participation is free.
“We need 500 dancers but we’re hoping to get 1,000 people dancing in one place at the same time,” Nieves said. “At 3 p.m. we’ll start to gather and shortly before 6 p.m. we’ll do a New Year’s Eve-type countdown and everyone will start dancing.”
Nieves said he’s been in contact with representatives from Guinness World Records and hopes to establish the first-ever official record for salsa dancing. Previous world dance records include the Dominican merengue, a cousin to salsa, performed by 232 people who danced for rueda (circle) style a minimum of five minutes at the Square of the Constitution in Sabiñanigo, Spain, on Aug. 7, 2004, according to the Guinness World Records website.
The Fiestas Patronales headliner this year is Ismael Miranda, a singer and Grammy nominee, who performs on Nov. 20, after the salsa-Guinness event. Also performing are Cano Estremera, Son By Four, Mario Ortiz and Willie Panama. Admission is $5; VIP $50. More information and reservations at prfiestas.com.
