LEESBURG (FBW)-Florida and Alabama Baptists are working in partnership with the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes to offer immediate care for 100 orphans from Haiti at the Convention’s Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center in Leesburg.
The FBCH also has offered any other space available throughout its network of foster homes and residential care programs throughout the state, according to Jan. 20 statements.
Noting sibling groups would be able to remain together and “preserve what little may be left of their families,” FBCH president Jerry Haag said the Children’s Homes would work with local churches and community organizations to provide translators for the children.
“We stand ready to care for more than 100 of these precious children,” Haag told Florida Baptist Witness. “We greatly appreciate the assistance and leadership from Dr. Sullivan who has done a remarkable and heroic job of providing resources and help to a country and people that are dear to his heart.”
John Sullivan, executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, said there is an immediate need for water, disposable diapers, and infant and lightweight blankets.
While housing orphan children at Lake Yale is “virgin territory” for the Convention, Sullivan said, “We are up to the task.”
Mobilizing to offer food, shelter, medical care, transportation and staff support for 100 orphaned children who may come to Florida from Haiti, Haag sent a letter to Florida’s Department of Children and Families formally offering the services for an initial five months.
“We have child care workers who are trained, approved, and prepared to offer basic residential services as well as social work services, such as case management and counseling,” Haag wrote in the letter.
Referencing the New Testament passage in Matthew 9:36 where Jesus looks at the crowds with compassion, Haag urged a similar look at Haiti “with eyes of action of compassion.”
“All of our hearts are filled with sympathy for the children and people of Haiti,” Haag said. “Sympathy is an emotion that fades away, but we have to be moved to the point of having compassion. Compassion is active and will motivate us to action. Our actions can change the lives and eternities of these Haitian children and adults.”
Gifts can be sent to the Florida Baptist Convention at 1230 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, Fl 32207, designated “Haiti Earthquake Relief.” Contributions by credit card can be made through the Convention’s website: www.flbaptist.org.

Food for thought, (or rather, those bits I could easily read). I am afflicted with color blindness (protanopia to be precise). I mostly use Safari browser (not sure if that is of any importance), and a great deal of this web page is a little difficult for me to read. I know that it is not your problem really, nonetheless it would be kind if you could bear in mind color blind visitors when doing the next web page design.
