Albertsons to shut 5 South Florida stores; 8 statewide
Grocer said stores were unprofitable as market competition grew.

Supermarket chain Albertsons LLC confirmed Wednesday it plans to shutter eight Florida stores, including five in South Florida in mid-February.
“Albertsons has had to make tough decisions about locations that are unprofitable,” company spokeswoman Christine Wilcox said in a statement.
The South Florida stores flagged for closure are located at 8030 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines; 20409 State Road 7, Boca Raton; 4801 Linton Blvd., Delray Beach; 4624 Hypoluxo Road, Lake Worth; and 12031 Southern Blvd., Loxahatchee.
The last day for employees is Feb. 13, and each location employs about 80 people, Wilcox said. The workers were notified Friday.
The company is working to place some employees in nearby stores, she said. Others may be eligible for severance pay.
